A Club Shaped by Community and Place

Chichester is a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage, from its historic architecture to its vibrant arts scene, but it also has a long and proud sporting tradition. Much of this activity is centred around Oaklands Park, a large expanse of parkland to the north-west of the city that was acquired in 1939 for the benefit of the local community. Over time, the park became home to a number of sporting and cultural organisations, and it is here, on land that was once little more than pasture and a pond, that Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club would eventually take root.

Foundations in Chichester

Racquet sports in Chichester date back to the late 19th century, with tennis played in Priory Park as early as 1895.

A number of small clubs and private courts existed before the Second World War, but over time many were lost, leaving a small, dedicated group of players carrying the game forward into the 1950s.

1961 – 1964

The Club is Born

A turning point comes as members unite to secure a permanent future for the club.

With support from the local council and community fundraising, a new site is established in Oaklands Park, where four tennis courts, squash courts and a clubhouse create a lasting home for the club.

1964 – 1984

Growth and Recognition

The club expands rapidly as membership rises, driven by the popularity of squash and growing interest in tennis.

Tournaments and visiting professionals bring wider recognition, helping to establish the club as a key sporting venue in the region.

1984 – 1994

Adapting to Change

The junior section flourishes, with strong family involvement driving participation and success.

At the same time, adult membership declines, prompting the club to rethink its direction and begin diversifying its offering.

1994 – 2014

Expansion and Transformation

The introduction of a gym broadens the club’s appeal and attracts new members.

Investment in facilities, including a tennis dome and upgraded social spaces, alongside a new name and structure, transforms the club into a modern racquets and fitness destination.

2014 – Present

Continuing to Evolve

The club continues to grow, balancing its proud heritage with a forward-looking approach.
